Bernard approached me following my exhibition at the Wallner Gallery, Nottingham, in June of 2009. He then made a visit to my studio where we discussed the possibility of undertaking a portrait commission in celebration of Helen’s 60th birthday. I visited the couples’ home where I took a series of photographs. Over the next few months I made the preparatory line drawing, sourced the fabrics and slowly the artwork came together. I say slowly as I had a baby during the commission, so I thank Helen for waiting patiently to receive her present. The warm, rustic colours of the piece have been inspired by Helen and the feel of Helen and Bernard’s Nottingham home. The artwork incorporates linens, distressed cotton and vintage kinono fabrics. Myself and my baby daughter delivered the piece last week and am pleased to say the couple were delighted.
